Port of London Authority

SCROLL DOWN

The Port of London Authority (PLA) is the custodian of the tidal Thames, with operations covering 95 miles of the River Thames. The PLA works to keep commercial and leisure users safe, protects and enhances the environment, and promotes the river for trade and travel.

London is the UK’s largest port, handling more than 45 million tonnes of cargo each year, employing more than 40,000 people and contributing over £3 billion to the economy annually.

The River Thames is also Britain’s busiest inland waterway, handling over five million tonnes of goods and materials, and ten million passenger journeys.

PLA Harbour Masters are responsible for ensuring the safety of navigation for all mariners in the Port of London, enforcing rules and regulations, and leading on port security and emergency and resilience planning.
