STCW Courses for Deck Cadets

During their college phases, Deck Cadets will undertake a number of STCW training courses as shown in the example below. However, the actual phase of individual course delivery may vary between nautical colleges.

College Phase 1

Personal Survival Techniques
Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
Proficiency in Elementary First Aid
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
Security Awareness (ISPS) course

Additional training in Phase 1 may include:

Designated Security Duties (ISPS) course
Entry into Enclosed Spaces

Certificate of Proficiency in Basic Oil, Chemical & Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations

College Phase 3

Proficiency in Medical First Aid

College Phase 5

Advanced Fire Fighting
Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than fast rescue boats)
Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM) at the Operational Level
Efficient Deckhand
Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)
GMDSS General Operators Certificate
Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training – Operational Level
