STCW Courses for Deck Cadets

During their college phases, Deck Cadets will undertake a number of STCW training courses as shown in the example below.  However, the actual phase of individual course delivery may vary between nautical colleges.  

College Phase 1

  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
  • Proficiency in Elementary First Aid
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  • Security Awareness (ISPS) course

 Additional training in Phase 1 may include:

  • Designated Security Duties (ISPS) course
  • Entry into Enclosed Spaces

Certificate of Proficiency in Basic Oil, Chemical & Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations

 

College Phase 3

  • Proficiency in Medical First Aid

 

College Phase 5

  • Advanced Fire Fighting
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than fast rescue boats)
  • Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM) at the Operational Level
  • Efficient Deckhand
  • Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)
  • GMDSS General Operators Certificate
  • Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training – Operational Level
