SCROLL DOWN
A Marine Electro-Technical Cadet follows a 3-year training programme, which leads to initial certification as an Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) by the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).
Electro-Technical Officers (ETOs) are part of the engineering department, work closely with the marine engineers and have responsibility for the safe operation and maintenance of all the electrical, electronic and communications equipment.
This includes the main Engine Room and auxiliary electrical machinery, as well as ship services such as electrical supply, communications, audio and visual. In addition, ETO’s have responsibility for the bridge navigational equipment, such as radars, other electronic aids to navigation and alarm systems.
Depending on ship type, maintenance tasks may also include entertainment equipment, IT, extensive hotel services and ship-specific technology relating to the operation of the vessel.
The ship’s Chief Electro-Technical Officer (CETO) is head of the ship’s Electro-Technical Department and holds responsibility for the efficient operation of the vessel’s electrical, electronic and communications systems outlined above.
The Marine Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) Cadet training route is the initial stage in an established career progression to certification as a ship’s Chief Electro-Technical Officer, with excellent prospects and salaries for those with the right qualifications, abilities and experience.
