SCROLL DOWN
A Marine Engineer Cadet follows a 3-year training programme, which leads to initial certification as an Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) by the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).
Marine Engineering Officers are responsible for the safe operation of all the vessel’s machinery. This includes the ship’s main propulsion equipment and auxiliary machinery, deck equipment and ship services such as galley and air conditional plant.
Depending on ship type, they may also hold responsibility for ship-specific technology relating to the cargo being carried (e.g. cargo, gas, oil or passengers). They also maintain and operate the ship’s environmental protection equipment.
The ship’s Chief Engineer is head of the ship’s Engineering Department, ensuring that the engine room and auxiliary machinery works effectively throughout sea voyages and in port. They also hold responsibility for the safety of officers and crew working in engineering and associated spaces.
The Marine Engineer Cadet training route is the initial stage in an established career progression to certification as a ship’s Chief Engineer, with excellent prospects and salaries for those with the right qualifications, abilities and experience.
There is also an Alternative training programme for those new entrants who already hold engineering qualifications recognised by the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA), or have completed a suitable engineering apprenticeship available to candidates who have previous engineering qualifications.
